Earlier this month Nokia launched its flagship smartphone, the Lumia 1020, featuring the second iteration of the Finnish company's groundbreaking 41MP image sensor. The smartphone was launched at a press event and plenty of samples were on hand for journalists to play with. Unfortunately, we were not allowed to publish any images taken with the 1020. Since then we've had to make do with a set of official sample images released by Nokia to assess the camera's performance.

I have the opportunity to shoot with a production sample of the Lumia 1020 and will be posting a few sets of real world images. Since one of the stated benefits of Nokia's oversampling technology is to provide better low light images - multiple pixels are "combined" to minimize random noise - I'm going to start things off with a set of low-light images shot in New York City. Over the next few days I'll be posting images that highlight image detail, dynamic range and the Lumia 1020′s lossless "zoom" capability. So stay tuned.

The images shown below are straight out of the camera with no additional processing. The aim here is to give you an idea of what you can expect from the camera in common real-world conditions. The Lumia 1020 is capable of providing both 5MP and 38MP still images for every capture. Below I'm providing links to the 5MP versions as they make use of oversampling to minimize image noise. In an upcoming image collection I'll be providing access to full resolution 38MP files.
